Labour reacts to governors over minimum wage saga

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its strong opposition to the proposal put forth by the governors, stating that it is not only dictatorial but also goes against the very concept of the minimum wage.

Labour In a statement cautioned the state governors against making any further inflammatory remarks regarding the minimum wage, as it could lead to industrial unrest.

The NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Mr Benson Upah, emphasized that if the issue of the minimum wage continues to be prolonged, the NLC may no longer be able to withstand the pressure for industrial action. The NLC also called on President Bola Tinubu, who had promised a living wage that surpasses the minimum wage, not to allow himself to be manipulated or cornered by unpatriotic governors. The NLC reminded the governors that the national minimum wage is not arbitrary, but rather a collective agreement that ensures a minimum standard of living for all workers in the country.

The demand by the governors to unilaterally determine the minimum wage undermines this principle and poses a threat to the welfare of Nigerian workers and the national economy. The NLC further emphasized that the national minimum wage should not be confused with the individual pay structures of the states, which are implemented based on their unique financial capabilities and circumstances.
