NGO seeks govt partnership to tackle mental health challenges

The Dr Yusuf John-Suberu Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has called for collaboration with the government to address the growing mental health challenges in the country.
The Executive Director of the Foundation, Dr Yusuf Suberu said this in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
Suberu said that mental health issues have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with increased poverty and lack of access to affordable healthcare contributing to the problem
He, however, said that was the need for a collective effort to address the mental health challenge, emphasising the importance of sustainable funding to support mental health initiatives.
The NGO boss proposed a multi-faceted approach to address mental health challenges, including:
Education and awareness, community-based initiatives, policy Reform among others.
“Mental health is a critical issue that requires urgent attention. We cannot do it alone, and that’s why we’re calling on the government to partner with us to provide sustainable solutions.
“We need to move beyond relying on international grants and donations. We need sustainable funding to ensure that our programs are effective and long-lasting.
“We also need to educating the public about mental health issues and reducing stigma around mental illness. Providing community-based mental health services and support is not left out .
“Also, advocating for policy reforms to ensure access to affordable healthcare and social services is paramount,”he said.
Suberu who doubled as a Professor of International affairs assured that effective collaboration between NGOs and governments would bring about significant benefits.
He added that Governments could provide NGOs with the necessary funding to scale their operations and increase their reach.
