Senate urged to ignore harassment allegation against Akpabio

The Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria on Monday called on the Nigerian Senate to remain focused on its constitutional responsibilities and not be distracted by the s3xual harassment allegation leveled against Senate President Godswill O. Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to the group, the allegation is a ploy to escape punishment from the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which is investigating Senator Natasha for breach of Senate rules.
The group claims that Senator Natasha has a history of making unsubstantiated allegations of sexual harassment against prominent persons to attract public sympathy and achieve her goals.
The group also pointed out contradictions in Senator Natasha’s claims and her husband’s statement, questioning the timing of the allegation and why it was not formally presented before the Senate.
The group also urged the Senate to adhere to its rules and parliamentary procedures, and not be swayed by sentiments or distractions.
They have also condemned statements made by former Senate President Bukola Saraki, calling on the Senate President to step aside for an investigation, stating that the matter was never formally presented before the Senate.
“We are therefore, calling on the Senate to religiously adhere to the strict enforcement of its rules and extant parliamentary procedures,” said Chief (Barr.) Francis Okereke Wainwei, the group’s Executive Director.
