VIDEO: Drama as Fayose declares self new PDP national chairman

Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, has set the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) abuzz with controversy after proclaiming himself the new National Chairman of the party.

In an unexpected and dramatic move, Fayose also announced the suspension of several key PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, his brother Ayo Fayose, and other members of the G5 group.

“It’s official; I’m the new national chairman of the PDP,” Fayose declared, revealing that he had taken steps to assume control of the party’s headquarters in Abuja. He further disclosed that the current Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had been suspended, and he had directed security personnel at Wadata Plaza to secure the building and hand over the key to the Secretariat.

In a no-nonsense tone, Fayose defended his decision to suspend the prominent party members, accusing them of engaging in anti-party activities. He urged anyone dissatisfied with the decision to seek legal action rather than cause disruption within the party.

“If you’re unhappy with this development, we don’t want any chaos at the Secretariat. Go to court,” he said. Fayose specifically targeted Atiku, stating that the former vice president had become a “headache” to the PDP.

Fayose’s self-proclamation and wave of suspensions come amidst a brewing leadership crisis within the PDP. A faction of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) recently suspended key figures, including Damagum, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade.

However, a recent ruling by the Abuja Federal High Court halted any attempts to remove Damagum from his position. The court order mandated that Damagum remains in office as the Acting National Chairman until the next PDP convention, scheduled for December of next year.

The battle for control of the party’s leadership has now taken a new turn, and the coming days will likely see intensified infighting and court interventions to settle the dispute.
