Breaking: El-Rufai reportedly dumps APC, announces new party

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has reportedly resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing ideological differences with the ruling party.
According to different posts on social media, especially, X (Formerly Twitter), El-Rufai, a key figure in the APC’s formation and its electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023, was said to have submitted his resignation letter to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, March 10, 2025. In the letter, he expressed deep disappointment over what he described as the party’s deviation from its founding principles.
According to a reports, published by dailydispatchnewspaper, El-Rufai emphasized his administration’s commitment to education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic development. However, he lamented that the APC has, in his view, abandoned democratic values and progressive governance.
“I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its viability, but recent developments over the past two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for the democratic principles and progressive values I hold dear,” he stated.
Declaring his allegiance to the SDP, El-Rufai urged Nigerians who share his concerns to join him in strengthening the party as a credible alternative. He expressed gratitude to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters, reaffirming his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s democracy.
With this move, El-Rufai positions himself as a key political figure in the evolving landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, as the SDP seeks to consolidate its influence as a strong opposition force.
As at the time of compiling this report, El-Rufai is yet to make any official statement to the claims.
